You need to master 'this' skill; to be effective leader
Bouncing
Back: Resilience
Everyone
someday will have to face some problems. Some get crushed because of the
problem and some found to be more optimistic and more aggressive to solve that
problem. Those who got crushed are less tough, they lack resilience. But those
who get up, show up & try to win are the ones with greatest toughness. Most
of the times leaders are found to have these qualities.
Leaders
need to be like rubber balls and just keep bouncing back! The ability to strike
back from adversity, regroup, re-organise and get going again, rather than
lamenting and stewing over past mistakes, failures disappointments or hurts, is
one of the greatest attributes of a leader. People can easily crumble when they
fail, make a mistake or wrongly assess something, but the strength of leader is
truly determined in the ability to bounce back.
Martina
Navratilova lost twenty one of her first twenty four matches against her arch
rival Chris Evert. She resolved to hit more freely on the big points, and the
ensuring transformation beat Evert thirty nine out of their next fifty seven
matches. No woman tennis player has ever won as many matches or tournaments.
The first children’s book written by Theodore S. Geisel or Dr. Seuss was
rejected by twenty three publishers. The twenty fourth publisher sold six
million copies. Both Martina Navratilova and Theodore Geisel mastered the art
of bouncing back.
The
art of turning tragedy into investment is one of the qualities everyone needs
to possess. If you are involved in leadership, you will have failures and
flops. Leaders require the inner emotional and spiritual resolve to bounce back
from the life jolting tragedies which so easily cripple others. It’s not that
we pursue misfortune, disadvantage, problems or failures; they come our way
regardless. It is the leaders’ leader who is able to pull together inner
resources and launch out again, setting his or her sails to catch what’s left
of the gale.
To
learn from past failures and mistakes is to not be crippled by them. A very
wise man once said that the only difference between stumbling blocks and
stepping stone is the way we use them.
The
relational leader is a big thinker characterised by passion, desire, the will
to win and a joie de vivre, no matter how tough times get. Such a person
is conviction driven, relying upon deeply held inner values to sustain and
nourish their dreams, so that they keep growing, building and nurturing
relationships with the big people they retain all around them. By so doing they
accomplish deeds greater than others can ever imagine. They are risk-takers who
take a chance on dreams and put their faith in the hands of those who assist
them. Such people are truly effective relational leaders who go on to build big
people.
